Garden Poem of the Day
And Where the Marjoram Once, and Sage, and Rue
By John Clare
And where the marjoram once, and sage, and rue,
And balm, and mint, with curl’d-leaf parsley grew,
And double marigolds, and silver thyme,
And pumpkins ‘neath the window climb;
And where I often, when a child, for hours
Tried through the pales to get the tempting flowers,
As lady’s laces, everlasting peas,
True-love-lies-bleeding, with the hearts-at-ease,
And golden rods, and tansy running high,
That o’er the pale-tops smiled on passers-by.

Gardener's Quote of the Day
"Gardening with herbs, which is becoming increasingly popular, is indulged in by those who like subtlety in their plants in preference to brilliance."

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix herbs with vegetables in my garden? Absolutely! Herbs make excellent companion plants for vegetables. Basil enhances tomato growth and flavor, dill attracts beneficial insects, and rosemary repels pests. Interplanting herbs with vegetables creates a healthier, more productive garden.
Where should I plant herbs in my garden layout? Plant tall herbs like dill and fennel at the back or north side so they don't shade shorter plants. Place frequently harvested herbs like basil and parsley near pathways for easy access. Sun-loving herbs go in the sunniest spots, while shade-tolerant herbs like mint and parsley work in partial shade areas.
Do herbs attract beneficial insects to my garden? Yes! Flowering herbs attract pollinators, predatory insects, and other beneficial wildlife. Dill, fennel, and cilantro attract ladybugs and lacewings that eat aphids. Lavender and thyme attract bees. This natural pest control benefits your entire garden.
Can I use herbs as border plants in my garden? Herbs make beautiful and functional borders! Low-growing herbs like thyme, oregano, and chives create attractive edging. Lavender and rosemary work as taller border plants. Herb borders add fragrance, attract pollinators, and provide fresh harvests while defining garden spaces.
