How to Save Cucumber Seeds: Quick & Easy Tips for Beginners
Seed saving is a very ecological thing to do especially if you grow your own vegetables. This simple practice will allow you to store your own garden seeds for many years and eliminate the need to buy new seed packs each year.
Now, there are lots of vegetables that you can preserve and use for seed-saving purposes. Cucumber is one of the most popular ones because its seeds are very easy to save. If you want to learn how to do it, these are the simple steps you should follow:
The first step is selecting the best cucumbers from your harvest. Always choose the best-looking and best-tasting crops so you can preserve those qualities and replant the seeds in the future.
After you’ve chosen your cucumbers, go ahead and slice them into halves. Scrape the seeds thoroughly and put them inside a cup half-filled with water. If you see any floating seeds, get them out of the cup. The good seeds will always stay at the bottom.
Let the seeds stay in the cup for at least 3-4 days. This stage is called the fermentation process, which is essential in seed saving. After the fermentation period, you will see a layer that protects the seeds. Remove that layer as well as any other floating seeds.
Now, rinse all the remaining seeds with water and dry them off by leaving them for 2-3 days. You may also use a hair blower for a quicker drying method. Once the cucumber seeds are completely dry, simply place them in an airtight container and store in the freezer for long-term storage. Watch this quick tutorial below for more details.
